What to Wear For Christmas: Five Occasions Solved for Women Over 50

Christmas week brings many different occasions, each needing its own approach. Figuring out what to wear for Christmas means solving: the Christmas Eve carol service possibly in a cold church, comfortable Christmas Day with family, Boxing Day gatherings, relaxed between-Christmas days, and celebratory New Year’s Eve.
You don’t need five separate outfits that only work once. You need versatile pieces that create multiple combinations, plus outfit formulas that actually work for each occasion.
Here’s exactly what to wear for Christmas week, shop your wardrobe for pieces you already have and use the handy shopping links for anything you want to add.
Christmas Eve: Carol Service in a Cold Church
Standing in a freezing church for an hour needs genuine warmth, not just pretty styling.
What Works:
A faux fur coat or substantial wool coat provides proper insulation. Underneath, wool or cashmere blend trousers with a quality knit keep you warm without bulk. Cashmere scarf, leather gloves, warm boots.
Cream or camel coats catch candlelight beautifully, alternatively navy or chocolate work equally well. Choose colours that flatter you rather than defaulting to black.
Christmas Eve Formula:
Wool trousers (navy, burgundy, or chocolate) + cashmere jumper (cream, camel, burgundy or perhaps a festive Fairisle) + faux fur or wool coat + cashmere scarf + statement earrings + warm ankle boots
This handles an hour in a cold church whilst looking appropriate for the occasion.

Christmas Day: Family Comfort with Style
Christmas Day means long hours sitting, eating, possibly helping in the kitchen. Comfort matters as much as style.
Velvet for Festive Feel:
Velvet trousers in burgundy, green, or navy provide festive texture with an elasticated waist for comfort. Pair with a silk, satin or cashmere top. Add statement earrings and you’re sorted.
A velvet top works beautifully with tailored wool trousers or a satin midi skirt. The velvet provides festive feel, the separates keep it comfortable.
The Dress Option:
A satin dress in burgundy, forest green, or red handles long family gatherings comfortably. Add an embellished cardigan or jacket if needed. Add gold jewellery, comfortable boots or flats.
Christmas Day Formula 1:
Velvet trousers (burgundy, green, or navy) + silk, satin or cashmere top + gold earrings + comfortable flats or low boots

Christmas Day Formula 2:
Satin dress (burgundy, red, or forest green) + knit + gold jewellery + comfortable flats

Both handle long family days whilst looking festive without being too dressed up for home.
Boxing Day: Casual Gatherings
Boxing Day gatherings are more relaxed. The outfit needs to handle more casual socialising whilst still looking good for visiting friends.
What Works:
Quality wide-leg trousers in comfortable fabrics. A knit in a colour that brightens winter days – red, burgundy, camel, cream. Ankle boots or flats. A warm coat for travelling between locations.
Add statement jewellery for smarter gatherings. Keep accessories minimal for very casual events.
Boxing Day Formula 1:
Wide-leg trousers (burgundy, camel, cream or navy) + cable knit or roll neck jumper (red, cream, or camel) + flats + warm coat + scarf

Boxing Day Formula 2:
Velvet jeans + Fairisle jumper + ankle boots + quality coat + gold jewellery

Both handle Boxing Day activities whilst keeping you warm and looking good for visiting friends.
Between Christmas and New Year: Cosy Days
These days don’t require formal dressing, but you still want to look pulled together for casual visiting or hosting.
Elevated Comfort:
Quality wide-leg comfortable trousers in good fabrics – cashmere, merino, or soft wool. Pair with a cashmere jumper or fine knit. Add a wrap or long cardigan. Quality trainers or comfortable boots.
A knitted dress over a fine base layer works equally well. Add a cardigan, comfortable footwear, minimal jewellery.
Choose colours that feel festive without screaming Christmas – burgundy, cream, camel, navy, forest green.
Between Christmas Formula:
Quality comfortable trousers + cashmere jumper + long cardigan or wrap + quality trainers or boots

This keeps you comfortable whilst maintaining enough polish for casual visitors or quick errands.
New Year’s Eve: Celebration with Friends
New Year’s Eve needs something celebratory without being over the top. Comfortable for an evening of socialising, festive enough for the occasion.
Metallic Accessories:
Gold or silver jewellery, a metallic clutch, shoes with metallic or sparkly details. These accessories transform simple pieces into celebration wear and work year after year.
The Outfit:
Satin or silk trousers in burgundy, navy, champagne or silver paired with a top or blouse with neck or sleeve detail. Add your metallic accessories.
Or a silk dress in a rich colour – burgundy, forest green, navy, deep red. Keep the cut simple, let the fabric and accessories create the celebration feel.
New Year’s Eve Formula 1:
Satin trousers + top with detail + metallic accessories + heeled boots or metallic shoes

New Year’s Eve Formula 2:
Silk or satin dress (burgundy, red, or forest green) + metallic accessories + heeled boots or metallic shoes + evening coat

Both feel celebratory through fabric and accessory choices rather than sequins or obvious party pieces.
Key Pieces Worth Owning
If you’re investing in new pieces for festive dressing, choose items that work for multiple years.
Velvet Trousers or Top:
One velvet piece in burgundy, forest green, or navy handles multiple festive occasions. Velvet trousers provide the most versatility. A velvet top comes second.
Quality Winter Coat:
A coat that keeps you genuinely warm for outdoor winter events. Choose a colour and style that suits you – this should last years.
Cashmere Knitwear:
Quality cashmere in colours that work with your existing wardrobe – burgundy, red, camel, cream, navy. These become your festive building blocks year after year.
Metallic Accessories:
Gold jewellery, a metallic clutch, shoes with sparkly details. Unlike sequinned clothes, these don’t date and work with different outfits each year.
Building with What You Own
You likely already have quality trousers, knitwear, boots, and a coat. Strategic additions create multiple festive combinations.
Smart Additions:
One velvet piece. Silk or satin separates in festive colours. Metallic accessories. A cashmere scarf or jumper in red, burgundy, or camel, Fairisle can be worn beyond Christmas too.
Every new piece should work with at least three items you already own.
Colours for What to Wear for Christmas
Choose colours that work across multiple festive occasions rather than being too specific to one event.
Versatile Festive Colours:
Red works from carol services to New Year’s Eve. Burgundy handles everything from church to celebrations. Navy works for all occasions. Cream brightens every event. Forest green provides richness. Camel or chocolate add warmth.
Build around colours that suit you. Add one or two festive accent colours through accessories if you prefer subtle Christmas styling.
Making It Work Practically
Christmas week means multiple outfit changes. Have pieces that work together rather than five completely separate outfits.
The Capsule Approach:
Three pairs of trousers, four tops, one velvet piece – could be velvet jeans if you prefer more casual looks, your winter coat. Two pairs of boots, metallic accessories, gold jewellery, several scarves, a faux fur collar to add to your coat to make it more dressy.
These pieces create all multiple occasions. Change the accessories and the formality shifts.

I Really enjoyed reading this Maria, especially the bit about looking at what you already have and expanding it. You are right about accessories being important, and that by switching them up you can dress up or down. I am a big fan of fur collars and coats over plain things as they always add a bit of glamour.
As you say metallic shoes and bags and statement earrings help too. I have the Jewellery but will look out for a metallic bag. I’m also now going shopping for a silk blouse and cream fluffy jumper. Thanks for the inspiration. I think I’m sorted for Christmas. 🎄🎄🎄🎄
Thank you for your comment Valerie. I’m so pleased you found it useful. Happy Christmas to you 🧑🎄
