How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe That Feels Like You (Not Just Another Cookie-Cutter List)

How to build a capsule wardrobe

It’s that time of year again.

The daffodils are out, the days are a bit longer, and you might be thinking about switching over your wardrobe for spring.

But if you’ve ever stood in front of your wardrobe mid-season swap and thought, “Where do I even start?”, I want you to know you’re not alone.

Because here’s the truth: most women I work with feel overwhelmed when it comes to their wardrobe. Not because they don’t care, but because the advice out there just doesn’t fit.

Let’s start with what’s NOT helpful

Search for “spring capsule wardrobe” and you’ll find the same tired checklist:

☑ A white shirt
☑ A trench coat
☑ Black trousers
☑ A striped top
☑ Neutral everything

And yes, they might look lovely in a flat lay. But do they work for your life?
Do they reflect your style, colouring or personality?
Do they bring you joy to wear?

Probably not.

That’s because most of these lists are created without you in mind. They’re based on someone else’s version of style—and often, someone else’s life.

Your capsule should feel like home

For me, a capsule wardrobe isn’t about restriction. It’s about clarity.
It’s about walking into your wardrobe and feeling that little exhale of, “Ahhh yes. This all works.”

It’s not about following rules or trying to turn yourself into a Pinterest-perfect minimalist.
It’s about building a wardrobe that’s aligned with who you are now—your lifestyle, your energy, your colouring, and what lights you up.

That’s what I teach inside my Capsule Wardrobe Guide. And I thought I’d share a few of the key foundations with you here too, so you can get started today.

Step One: Start with you and your life

Before we talk about clothes, we talk about you.

Because your wardrobe should support your life—not the other way around.

So think about:

  • What do your weeks actually look like?
  • Where are you going? What do you need outfits for?
  • Are you retired, working from home, travelling, socialising, caring for others?

When we start with your lifestyle, we can build a wardrobe that truly serves you. No more “I have nothing to wear” moments, because every piece has a purpose.

Step Two: Use outfit formulas, not fixed rules

One of the most freeing things you can do is to stop focusing on individual items—and start thinking in formulas.

This is where my Effortless Outfit Formulas come in.
They give you flexible, repeatable outfit ideas that take the stress out of getting dressed—without ever boxing you in.

Think things like:

Dark jeans + silky blouse + relaxed blazer + ballet pumps
Easy dress + denim jacket + trainers + colourful bag
Longline cardigan + column of colour + necklace + flats

Once you find your favourite combinations, you’ll be amazed how much easier everything becomes—from daily dressing to packing for a weekend away.

Step Three: Add personality, colour and joy

This is the part that brings it all to life.

Most capsule wardrobes you see online are built on beige and black—but where’s the fun in that?

In my world, capsules include:

  • Colour palettes that suit you
  • A splash of print if you love it
  • Pieces that reflect your personality
  • Accessories that elevate everything

Because your wardrobe should make you feel visible. Vibrant. Like the best version of you.

Step Four: Plan before you shop

This is where the magic happens.
In the Capsule Wardrobe Guide, I teach you how to plan your wardrobe like a stylist: identifying gaps, building mini capsules, and shopping intentionally.

It’s how I helped one client pack for a 3-week trip to Japan with ease (and no panic over what to wear), and another feel confident and stylish packing for a wine tour in Provence.

Because when your wardrobe is planned with purpose, getting dressed—and packing—is no longer stressful. It becomes a pleasure.

Ready to feel that kind of ease too?

If you’re tired of:

  • Overpacking “just in case”
  • Having a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing that feels like you
  • Feeling like your style is out of sync with your life…

Then it’s time to try a different approach.
