There’s a certain freedom that comes with staying close to home for the summer.

No frantic packing, no airport queues, no adapters to remember. But while staycations offer a slower, more mindful way to holiday — from coastal walks and countryside breaks to boutique hotels a few hours from home — they often come with a style dilemma:

How do I feel stylish and pulled-together without overdressing for my own country?

For many women I work with, staycations become a kind of in-between. Not quite a city break, not quite a beach holiday — and certainly not the kind of trip you feel like shopping for. The result? An odd mix of old jeans, throw-on dresses that don’t really fit anymore, and a hoodie “just in case.”

Let’s change that.

Because what you wear still matters — even if you’re just down the road.

Why “Just Enough Effort” is the Sweet Spot

A staycation wardrobe isn’t about trying hard. It’s about dressing in a way that feels intentional — where you look in the mirror and think, “Yes, this is me.”

It’s about smart layering, relaxed polish, and pieces you can rewear without feeling like you’ve packed your oldest favourites just because you’re staying in the UK.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s ease. Effortless looks that feel like your best self — without overthinking every outfit.

My Formula for a Frump-Free UK Break

Here’s an example of what to pack for a staycation in the UK — a mix of countryside walks, coastal drives, pub lunches and gallery visits. Nothing dramatic. Just simple, comfortable style that makes you feel like yourself.

Daytime Layers:

  • Soft wide-leg trousers in a neutral colour — endlessly comfortable, but with movement and shape.
  • Simple tops  — breathable and fresh, styled under a soft cardigan or lightweight blazer.
  • White trainers or leather sandals — practical, but elevated. I avoid flip-flops unless I’m actually on sand.
  • Denim jacket or lightweight mac — the key to keeping things casual, layered and pulled-together.

Evening Polish:

  • Shirt dress — can be worn belted or loose, depending on what works for you. Wear with your trainers or shoes and swap out the self belt for a more dressy leather option.
  • Earrings and a scarf — I never travel without one. They add a finishing touch and a pop of colour.
  • Slingback, Mary Jane or espadrille-style shoe — dressier than a sandal, but still easy to walk in.

Bonus Pieces That Make a Difference:

  • A colour-pop bag that lifts a neutral base.
  • A cropped cardigan that works over both trousers and dresses.
  • A set of mix-and-match pieces with outfits planned before you pack — not packed ‘just in case’.

I’ve added all of these items in my LTK Staycation Capsule Edit.

The Truth About “Frump”

The word itself makes me wince, but it comes up constantly. Women tell me they’re scared of looking frumpy, but don’t know where that tipping point actually is.

Here’s my take:

Frump happens when clothes stop reflecting who you are.
When you choose what’s “safe” instead of what you actually like.
When your outfit feels like following rules rather than you expressing yourself.

The anti-frump approach isn’t about high fashion or what influencers say you should be wearing. It’s about choosing pieces that are soft, modern and aligned with your personality — whatever that looks like.

Inside the Capsule Wardrobe Course, I teach you how to build this kind of confidence into every capsule you create — so that frump doesn’t stand a chance.

Final Thought

You don’t need a plane ticket to deserve style.
You don’t need a packed itinerary to justify wearing something that makes you feel beautiful.
You don’t need to save your favourite clothes for “better” holidays – wear your clothes and get value from them!

Your staycation is still your time. Your break. Your moment to reconnect — not just with where you are, but who you are.

So pack for that.

If you’d like help building a travel capsule — whether for a full holiday or a low-key weekend away — I can guide you step-by-step in the Capsule Wardrobe Course.
