Seasonal Colour Analysis Got It Wrong: Here’s What Actually Suits You

Bespoke colour analysis

I’ve been doing colour analysis for over 20 years. And in that time, I’ve completely abandoned the traditional seasonal system.

Not because it doesn’t work for some people. But because it fails most of the women I work with.

If you’ve ever been told you’re a “Winter” or “Summer” and felt trapped by rules that don’t quite fit, this is why.

Why I Abandoned Seasonal Colour Analysis

The seasonal system was developed in the 1980s based on rigid categories. You’re sorted into Winter, Summer, Spring, or Autumn based on whether you’re “warm” or “cool” and “light” or “dark.”

The problem is real women don’t fit into four boxes or even the later developed 12 “extended seasons”.

I’ve worked with women who are supposedly “Cool Summers” who feel drained in the prescribed soft mauves and pale blues. I’ve seen “Warm Autumns” who come alive in colours their “season” tells them to avoid.

The seasonal system creates more rules and more confusion. You’re told to avoid entire colour families. Your wardrobe becomes restrictive but you stick to just a few colours you actually like.

And most frustratingly, it ignores your lifestyle, personality, and the wardrobe you’ve already invested in. I’ve seen women get rid of a whole wardrobe of the “wrong” colours only to discover they don’t feel happy in what they “should” be wearing.

What I Do Instead: The Bespoke Approach

My Bespoke Colour Analysis starts with you, not with a predetermined category.

I assess your natural colouring – skin tone, undertones, hair colour, eye colour – as a unique combination, not as a type to be sorted.

Then I consider your lifestyle. Are you in corporate environments needing authority colours? Working from home wanting comfortable sophistication? Travelling frequently needing versatile capsule palettes? Or retired but wanting to still feel stylish and well put together?

I look at you as an individual. What investment pieces do you already own? What colours make you feel confident? What shades have you bought repeatedly because you’re drawn to them?

The result is YOUR palette. Specific colours that work for your unique colouring, your life, and your personal style.

These aren’t rigid categories like “cool pinks.” The combination I choose is unique to you. The exact colours that work for you, not the category that’s “close enough.”

How This Works in Practice

If you’ve been told you’re a “Cool Summer” and you have a wardrobe full of soft greys, cool blues, and muted pinks but feel uninspired because they don’t feel like “you” they may be technically correct, but there’s something missing.

When I do your Bespoke Colour Analysis, I look at two things. First, your inherent colouring -what actually works with your physical colouring now. You may need some warmth in your palette, but not the orange-based warmth of traditional “Autumn” seasons. Soft warm neutrals like camel, cream, and soft gold. Combined with the cool blues in your eyes and soft pink in your skin.

Second and I think key, I look at your personality colours. The images you send me – interiors you love, artwork that draws you, nature photography – this can reveal colours that mean something to you that would never have been in your standard cool Summer palette.

It’s the difference between looking at you as a category and looking at you as a unique individual.

You’ll go from a wardrobe full of “correct” clothes that don’t inspire you to a focused palette you’ll love because it’s you.

Why This Requires Professional Analysis

I know you’ve probably tried working this out yourself. Perhaps you’ve held fabrics up to your face in natural light. Maybe you’ve taken those online quizzes that ask about your skin tone and eye colour. Perhaps you’ve asked friends which colours suit you best.

Here’s why that doesn’t give you the answers you need.

You can’t see your own colouring objectively. When you look in the mirror, you see yourself as you’ve always looked. You don’t notice the subtle way certain colours brighten your eyes or the way others cast shadows under your jaw.

Free online quizzes use generic categories. They ask whether you have “warm or cool” undertones, whether your hair is “light or dark.” But real colouring is far more nuanced than multiple choice questions can capture. They’re designed to sort you into the same four seasonal boxes I’ve already explained don’t work.

Understanding undertones requires a trained eye and years of experience. It’s not just “warm or cool”. It’s understanding how much warmth, which type of warmth, and how that interacts with depth and clarity in your overall colouring. It’s seeing what most people can’t see about themselves.

Most importantly, knowing which specific shades within each colour family work for you is where the real transformation happens. It’s not enough to know “blue suits you.” You need to know if that’s soft teal, navy, or dusty blue. The difference between wearing a colour and wearing YOUR colour is everything.

How My Bespoke Colour Analysis Works

My Bespoke Colour Analysis is delivered completely virtually, and that’s intentional.

Here’s the process:

You send me photos and inspiration images. I need 3-4 clear photos of you in natural lighting so I can see your colouring properly (hair, skin, eyes). Plus 6-10 images that inspire you. Interiors you love, nature scenes that draw you, artwork, fashion images. Anything that genuinely speaks to you.

I analyse two things. First, your inherent colouring: what works with your physical colouring right now. Not ten years ago or using generic rules.

Second, your personality colours – the part this makes this truly unique to you. The images you send me reveal patterns in what you’re drawn to. These become part of your palette because the right colours don’t just flatter your complexion. They express who you are.

I create your complete bespoke palette of around 60 carefully curated shades including neutrals, core colours, and accent colours that work together beautifully.

You receive an 18-20 page PDF document that includes your inherent colouring analysis, your personality colours (based on your inspiration images), your complete 60-colour palette and colour combination guidance.

What makes this different:

You get considered analysis, not rushed real-time judgments. I can spend proper time with your colouring assessment and palette creation without watching the clock.

You have a permanent reference. Save the PDF to your phone, screenshot your palette, reference it when shopping. It’s always accessible, unlike memories from appointments that fade.

Everything’s written down with visual examples. No trying to remember what was said or what colours were suggested. It’s all there.

The virtual format means faster turnaround (no appointment scheduling) and better value (no studio overhead costs).
