How To Mix Colour In Your Wardrobe Confidently

Over the years as a stylist, I have done literally hundreds of colour analysis sessions. Both in person and virtually. I’ve changed more than once the system I used. Starting many years ago with the Seasonal approach, moving to a Tonal system and finally creating my own system with a totally personalised palette for each client. So showing clients how to mix colour in their wardrobe confidently is something I love to do.

While I no longer conduct individual colour services I do still create colour palettes for my private clients’ wardrobes. It’s one of the first steps in creating a cohesive wardrobe.

You may be bored with the colours in your wardrobe or feel too restricted. I often find this with clients who had colour analysis many years ago and were told they were, for example, a Spring. Now they won’t wear anything outside of that palette. I’d encourage you to break out of those rigid boundaries and wear what you love. I believe if you love a colour and it makes you happy, you’ll look good in it.

On the other hand, if you are struggling to put outfits together in your wardrobe, perhaps you have too much of a mish mash of colours and nothing works together.

Having said that, I do like to be a little creative with my colour mixes and inspiration. I don’t believe there is any reason you can’t wear red and pink together for example. I know a lot of women either find this hard to do, or don’t have the confidence to wear a creative colour mix.

One of the areas I will be teaching inside my upcoming Capsule Wardrobe Masterclass will be creating a colour palette that inspires you.

With that in mind, I thought I would share some of the colour mixes I’ve been using inside my own wardrobe and the inspiration for them.

Camel and red autumn outfit, mixing colours in your wardrobe

This first combination is inspired by one of the trends of the season – mixing red and camel. I love this combination, I feel it’s a little less harsh and obvious than mixing it with black.

As a lover of chocolate brown, I will be wearing these pieces with some wide leg chocolate brown jeans too.

Colour mix autumnal greens and tan outfit

The colours of Autumn leaves. Tan and olive green with splashes of orange and lime. While I could use a tan bag with this outfit, I feel like the lime adds a little more interest and creativity.

How to mix colour, colour wheel adjacent colours

Cobalt blue and Olive green. Blue and green sit beside each other on the colour wheel. But you might not have thought about mixing what is a muted colour (the green) and a brighter colour (the blue). You can see I have a scarf with this combination and it works beautifully so why not echo it in the outfit?

How to mix colour in your wardrobe, colour wheel opposite colours

Green and aubergine. Another unusual combination, but one that works because these colours are known as complementary. They sit opposite each other on the colour wheel.

I hope I have inspired you to be a little more creative with the colours in your wardrobe and shown you how to mix colour confidently using these concepts.
