What to wear - country style

There’s an art to dressing for countryside Saturdays. You want to look polished at the farmers market without appearing overdressed, practical enough for farm shops, yet put together enough for an impromptu pub lunch with friends.

After years of styling women who’ve embraced country style over 50, I’ve learned that it isn’t about looking like you’ve stepped out of a Country Living photoshoot. It’s about quality pieces that work beautifully across the varied demands of country life.

Living in Berkshire, my days often involve a mix of woodland walks, browsing the market town shops, meeting friends for country pub brunch, or popping to the yard where my daughters keep their horses. Each requires a slightly different approach, but the formula remains the same: quality pieces that transition effortlessly from practical to polished.

The Countryside Formula

The secret to countryside dressing is the three-layer approach. Your base layer handles comfort and movement, your middle layer provides warmth and structure, and your outer layer deals with weather whilst looking intentional.

Your weekend outfit needs to be as strategic as your work wardrobe. The difference is that instead of transitioning from office to evening, you’re moving from muddy paths to pub interiors, from farm shops to coffee in Windsor.

Five Complete Country Outfits for Autumn

Outfit 1: The Farmers Market Explorer

The pieces: Chocolate brown cord trousers, cream merino wool jumper, navy wool utility jacket, leather ankle boots, crossbody leather bag and perhaps a silk square scarf.

This combination works perfectly for browsing local markets or wandering through market towns. The cord adds texture and durability, the knit provides warmth without bulk, and the jacket transitions beautifully from outdoor stalls to cosy cafes.

The boots ground the outfit whilst providing comfort for extended walking, and the crossbody bag keeps your hands free for selecting the best seasonal produce.

Outfit 2: Woodland Walks with Style

The pieces: Water-resistant walking trousers in olive green, merino wool base layer, fleece gilet, waterproof walking boots, small rubberised bag and in case of rain a waterproof coat and hat.

For those morning woodland walks I love, this outfit handles muddy paths and unpredictable weather but still looks put together. The walking trousers dry quickly if you encounter wet undergrowth, and the fleece gilet provides warmth without restricting movement.

The merino base layer regulates temperature beautifully, and if you stop for coffee afterwards, you simply remove the gilet to look more polished whilst staying comfortable.

A waterproof coat is a must have and these clever rubberised accessories (bag and hat) are stylish but practical.

Outfit 3: Country Pub to Windsor Wander

The pieces: Neutral relaxed trousers, elevated roll neck knit, Houndstooth blazer, suede chunky loafers, taupe handbag, carefully considered accessories.

Perfect for those leisurely pub brunches that might extend into an afternoon wander around Windsor. This outfit works beautifully in historic settings whilst being comfortable enough for extended walking.

The roll neck with its gold riveted cuffs is an elevated wardrobe staple and the blazer is a timeless quality piece that works with both tailoring and casual jeans or cords, from village pub to exploring Windsor’s elegant streets.

Outfit 4: Horse Yard Visits with Practicality

The pieces: Jodhpur style jeans, warm wool jumper, country jacket, wellington boots, saddle bag.

For visits to the yard where my daughters have their horses, this outfit acknowledges the muddy, practical reality whilst still looking purposeful. The jeans handle outdoor conditions, whilst the boots provide grip and protection.

The quilted jacket offers warmth and the bag has a nod to equestrian heritage without being impractical. Even though I don’t ride, I appreciate clothing that works with the environment rather than against it.

Outfit 5: Market Town to Country House

The pieces: Burgundy midi skirt, Biscuit ribbed knit, brown leather jacket, brown knee boots, woven leather shoulder bag.

This combination works beautifully for those days that start with errands in the market town and might end with an impromptu visit to friends or a country house venue. The midi skirt feels polished, whilst the suede jacket adds contemporary edge.

The burgundy and brown captures autumn’s rich palette, and photographs beautifully against countryside backdrops.

The Country Style Over 50 Principles

Quality Over Quantity Matters More Here In country settings, your clothes need to work harder. They face unpredictable weather, varied terrain, and diverse social situations. Investing in quality pieces that age beautifully makes perfect sense when your jacket might encounter everything from morning mist to afternoon sunshine.

Good Outerwear Is Non-Negotiable Your coat or jacket often determines whether an outfit works for countryside living. A beautifully cut tweed jacket or wool coat can elevate simple pieces for pub lunches, whilst a quality fleece gilet provides warmth without sacrificing style for woodland walks.

Fabrics That Work With Country Life Tweed, cord, wool, and quality cotton all improve with wear, feel appropriate for rural settings and handle the practical demands of country living.

The Right Accessories Ground Your Look A good leather handbag, quality boots, and perhaps a silk scarf can transform practical pieces into polished outfits. These accessories enhance your outfit while still being practical – crossbody bags for hands-free shopping, waterproof boots for muddy paths, scarves for changeable weather.

Making It Work for Your Country Life

The beauty of countryside dressing is that it doesn’t require an extensive wardrobe. A few quality pieces in coordinating colours can handle everything from morning errands to evening socialising.

Choose colours that work with natural settings – rich browns, forest greens, warm creams, and deep burgundies all work beautifully and feel appropriate for country environments. Add navy for versatility and perhaps one or two statement colours for personality.

Most importantly, choose pieces you actually enjoy wearing. Country living offers the freedom to dress for your own pleasure rather than impressing others.

The goal isn’t to look like a country stereotype, but to dress thoughtfully for your actual life. Whether that’s walking through woodlands, browsing local markets, or meeting friends at your favourite country pub, the right outfit makes every experience easy and enjoyable.

Country style over 50 is about embracing quality, comfort, and timeless elegance that works with your lifestyle rather than against it.

  1. Thank you Maria for this post, it was particularly interesting to me, and in colours I love! I live by the sea in a small town with probably a more laid back vibe, I think the same principles apply, beach walks, pubs, cafes and restaurants as well as markets! Any practical ideas, I’m thinking a wintery coastal grandma I think. Thank you
