5 Summer Staples That Work Every Year

One of the biggest myths in midlife style is that you need to reinvent your wardrobe every summer.
You don’t.
Yes, trends change. Colours come and go. And our bodies — and lifestyles — evolve. But there are a handful of pieces that consistently work year after year. Pieces that don’t just survive a season, but earn their place in your wardrobe because they always make you feel like you.
I call these your summer staples — the foundation of effortless style. They don’t shout. They don’t date. And when you get the right versions for your shape and life, they’re the items you reach for again and again.
In this post, I’m sharing five of my personal essentials — with shoppable affiliate links (plus alternatives) — and showing you how to build them into a summer capsule that works now and next year.

1. The Linen Shirt (Worn Your Way)
There’s a reason this one never goes out of style. A good-quality linen shirt is breathable, versatile, and works on every body shape — the key is in how you wear it.
Wear it:
Tied at the waist with a midi skirt.
Open over a vest and wide-leg trousers.
Tucked loosely into jeans with sleeves rolled and layered jewellery.
Style tip:
Go for 100% linen or a linen-cotton blend. Look for length in the hem and room in the arms. It shouldn’t feel stiff — it should move with you.

2. Wide-Leg Summer Trousers
If there’s one item I recommend to many of my clients over 50, it’s this. Wide-leg trousers in a soft, structured fabric elongate the legs, add movement, and keep you cool and elegant.
Wear them with:
- A sleeveless top and a lightweight jacket
- A tucked-in shirt and flat sandals
- A stripe tee and woven bag for an easy French feel
Fit tip:
Choose a mid- or high-rise and avoid anything that clings at the thigh. They should flow, not grip.

3. A Simple, Breathable Midi Dress
Not the “throw-on” dress that gets baggy after three wears. I’m talking about the right midi — the one that flatters, breathes, and makes you feel like a grown woman who’s got better things to do than fiddle with straps or shapewear.
Wear it:
On its own with espadrilles.
With a denim jacket and trainers.
Under a lightweight cardigan with bold earrings.
Look for:
Natural fabrics (cotton, linen, viscose), a length that skims the calf, and enough shape through the waist to avoid the dreaded tent effect.

4. The Statement Sandal
Not high, not flat — something in between. A sandal that adds polish to even the simplest outfit. The kind of shoe you can walk in and feel dressed in.
Ideal for:
- Evening drinks when heels feel too much
- Casual weddings
- Dressing up linen or jersey basics
Style tip:
Metallics (gold, pewter, bronze) work with almost every colour palette and add a touch of sophistication. Avoid overly strappy or heavy soles — they can visually shorten the leg.

5. The Woven Bag (That Still Feels Luxe)
Straw totes can feel a bit ‘beach bag’ if you’re not careful. But a structured woven bag — especially one with leather trims or polished details — instantly elevates a summer outfit.
Use it with:
- Dresses and sandals for a city look
- Jeans and a blouse for market mornings
- Monochrome looks to add texture
Look for:
Medium size, structured base, and crossbody or shoulder options. It should look like part of the outfit — not something you grabbed last-minute.
